Flexible sedation options for anxious patients

We understand that dental visits can be stressful. That's why we offer several Conscious Procedural Sedation techniques:

INTRAVENOUS SEDATION
Midazolam drug administered through a cannula in your arm

Intravenous(IV) Sedation using Midazolam creates a relaxed and sleepy feeling, with initial amnesia to help you forget the experience. This sedation method is useful for patients with dental anxiety, sensitive teeth, difficulty getting numb, or those who prefer not to remember their dental experience. While you remain conscious, your vital signs are constantly monitored, and an antidote is available to reverse the effects if needed. Note all pharmacology have side effects, you are given informed consent instructions that are mandatory.
ORAL SEDATION
Lorazapam drug administered through pills

Oral Sedation uses Lorazapam with the same strict protocols and medical history requirements as IV sedation, but it's a gentler and more convenient option involving taking a personalised dose related number of pills one hour before a procedure. This method is ideal for patients who prefer to avoid needles . While it provides a milder level of sedation compared to IV Sedation, it still ensures a calm and comfortable visit.
NITROUS OXIDE / RELATIVE ANALGESIA(RA) SEDATION (Laughing Gas)
inhalation gas mixed with oxygen

Nitrous Oxide Sedation is a safe and quick method, where a controlled mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen is inhaled to help you relax. This technique is ideal for nervous patients and can be adjusted to your personal comfort level, with the added benefits of being able to eat beforehand and drive afterwards. The effect is less than Midazolam and Lorazapam, but a great technique for a nervous patient to get them over the initial hurdle when combined with near painless injection techniques. However, it's not suitable for pregnant women and a few other medical conditions.

Sedation can be very useful for patients who have dental anxiety or phobia, have sensitive teeth especially with hygiene/cleaning procedures, have difficulty getting numb with traditional methods, or require complex or time consuming dental treatments. Talk to us to find out if sedation is a good option for you.

Personalised consultations and treatments

Check-ups

During a general dental check-up, our team will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and oral health. We'll review your medical and dental history, visually examine your mouth, and use specialized instruments to check for signs of tooth decay, cracks, and wear.

We may also take X-rays to diagnose underlying issues, and provide personalised recommendations for improving your oral hygiene habits. We can also offer treatment options for a range of dental issues including bruxism.

Dentures

Dentures are a cost-effective solution to replace missing teeth, restoring function, appearance and facial support. They are removed at night, and replaced each morning with cleaning between this time.

Lakeside Dental Practice in Queenstown offers several types of dentures: chrome cobalt dentures with a streamlined framework and precise clasps for optimal comfort; Valplast, with a wireless clasp technique; and acrylic dentures which are a more affordable option made from a strong, plastic-like material.

Root Canal or Endodontic Dentistry

Root canal or endodontic dentistry is required when the nerve or pulp of a tooth becomes infected, often due to decay or trauma. The procedure involves isolating and numbing the tooth, accessing the nerve pulp chamber, and removing the infected tissue. Finally, the canal is filled with a specialised plug to prevent bacteria from re-entering, and the crown is restored to prevent leakage and reinfection.

Minor Oral Surgery and Wisdom Teeth

We can assess and treat a range of oral surgical needs, from wisdom tooth removal to other minor procedures, using advanced techniques and anesthesia options for optimal care. We have OPG jaw scan facilities to x-ray your wisdom teeth and determine the anatomical problems that can be associated with some wisdom teeth removal and whether IV Sedation is more appropriate for difficult cases, or sometimes a referral to our oral surgeon might be necessary.

Preventative care to maintain optimal oral health

We emphasise the importance of preventive dentistry and we educate our patients about effective dental hygiene practices at home. Regular cleanings and check-ups with us help catch issues early, saving you time and money in the long run. Our preventive care services are designed to maintain your oral health and prevent future problems.

We also provide specialised services for children under the free School Dental Scheme until their eighteenth birthday.

We are a registered ACC provider and can offer our services for trauma-related dental needs, and if you need an emergency dentist, call us.

FAQs for general dentistry

The most common indication that you might need a root canal is persistent pain. Other symptoms include heightened sensitivity to hot or cold, changes in tooth colour, and swelling or tenderness in the gums around the affected tooth. Only a dentist or specialist can confirm if a root canal is required, so it’s important to see your dentist promptly if you experience any of these symptoms.

Not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth extracted, as it depends on individual circumstances. Wisdom teeth often become impacted, or stuck, due to insufficient space in the mouth, leading to overcrowding, misalignment, or damage to neighbouring molars. These issues can create pockets for bacteria, posing a risk to your oral health. For these reasons, removal may be recommended to maintain the overall health and alignment of your teeth. However, some people have enough room for their wisdom teeth to emerge without complications, in which case removal may not be needed.

Dental sedation is generally safe when administered by experienced professionals, with complications being rare. However, certain pre-existing medical conditions can increase the risk of complications. Your dentist will thoroughly review your medical history to ensure that sedation is a safe option for you. It’s important to discuss any concerns you have with your dentist before undergoing sedation.

Regular dental check-ups allow your dentist to detect issues like tooth decay, gum disease, or oral cancer early. Addressing these problems promptly can save you time, money, and the potential discomfort of more extensive treatment later on. Additionally, routine visits provide the reassurance that your oral health is in good condition.

During your consultation, you can address any concerns, and we will recommend the best sedation options to help you feel relaxed and manage pain during surgery. If you choose to be sedated, you won’t feel pain during the procedure. After the surgery, some discomfort or pain may persist for a few days, but it can typically be managed with pain relief medication and usually subsides within a few days.
